Sew you think you can Cook? Sew? Dance? I’ll only claim to knowing how to cook, and sometimes even that is questionable. It’s time for the monthly installment of the Blogger C.L.U.E. Society and this month I was assigned to Lauren from “Sew You Think You Can Cook”. Lauren is an energetic, aerospace engineer, who is now dedicating her time to staying home with her one-year old son. She has aspirations to transition her career and become a caterer. If that is not enough, Lauren also quilts, crafts and throws parties. I’m exhausted just thinking about how active her life is!
This month our theme was Grilling. I know you are expecting a cocktail from me, because how can you grill and throw a good BBQ without a cocktail? But I’m throwing a curve ball this month and decided to try Lauren’s Chinese Barbeque Chicken. Sous Chef loves Asian flavors, and I thought I could “grill” this indoors since our temps have been abnormally hot for June (trust me, no one wants to grill when its 114 outside). Clearly, this was not my shining moment in recipe selection as I missed the part about a slow-cooker (I don’t own one). I may have also missed the fact that my kitchen was missing hoisin sauce but had Black Bean Garlic Sauce from a Sunday Supper recipe (forgot it was thrown out when we went on the low-sodium diet). Long and short of it was that I was forced to make a couple tweaks to the recipe to fit the ingredients/appliances available to me and the end result was quite delightful. I do intend to buy a slow-cooker (or maybe someone will take the hint and buy it for my birthday or Christmas – hint, hint, Sous Chef) and pick up a jar of hoisin sauce when I’m at the market next so I can make Lauren’s exact version. Lauren’s recipe though is the perfect example of a recipe that can be successfully replicated if you need to substitute for similar ingredients at hand. It is important to remember to be fearless in the kitchen and adapt as necessary.
Make sure to check out all the appetizing recipes on Lauren’s site “Sew You Think You Can Cook”, and the rest of the great recipes the Blogger C.L.U.E. Society members rounded up for you this month!

I’m with you on the “too hot to grill” outside thing, Christy! But your chicken looks wonderful! Way to roll with the punches and make the recipe work despite the missing bits.
Love that comment – yes be fearless in the kitchen and don’t be afraid to adapt; so true!! “Roll with it”. 🙂 Your chicken looks like it came out delicious!
We love Asian-inspired foods too so I know my family would flip for this chicken. I hate it when I find out that I’m out of an ingredient WHILE I’m cooking a dish, especially if I was sure I had it! You definitely went with the flow though and it came out beautifully.
I love your little Sous Chef! YUM! This is a wonderful dish and I cannot wait to try it. Because my SIL is Asian we love anything Asian here….and he loves to grill!
I need to remember to be fearless! We enjoy recipes that are Asian-inspired….there are always great flavors!
I have a whole boatload of boneless skinless chicken in my freezer and I’m always on the hunt for new recipes. We’d love this—and glad to know it’s so adaptable. Yours looks DELISH!
I love Rafa!! He is just too cute!
I love Asian flavored food! This recipe sounds like a perfect grilled chicken…I’m always looking for new flavors for my grilled chicken. It looks mouthwatering, Christy!
What a great chicken recipe – I bet it did not last long. Your doggies are so cute. I love my havanese puppies so much too – they are the best breed. 🙂
It sounds funny to me to hear people say that it is too hot to grill. Here in Michigan we say it is too hot to turn on the stove/oven. Of course, we consider anything over 80* hot LOL. Always looking for good Asian flavors for my Chinese daughter, thanks for sharing.
Looks fabulous! I’ve got a post on substituting almost done. Of course, it’s been almost done for a couple of weeks…
Kudos for powering through! Your grilled version looks wonderful.
Really liking the combo of ingredients, sounds like a super scrumptious piece of chicken. I will most definitely have to make this soon. I love how quickly you can get it sorted for dinner.
Love the pics of the pups!
